light pollution and the effects on wildlife. 4/26

We have grown used to lights outside of our houses at night. Even if we’ve grown used to it some animals depend on the darkness. so we have to ask ourselves what are the effects on wildlife?  One of the horrible effects on wildlife is birds. Birds when flying are often confused about what is stars  lights from buildings or street lamps. 9.8 million to one billion birds die from light pollution per year.  Not only are birds being affected, zooplankton are too. Zooplankton during the night rise up towards the top of the ocean to feed on algae. During the night now, they are not sure if it is night so they don’t rise up as much. Because of this the algae are growing out of control so there is not as much room for other water vegetation to grow and so the animals who eat the different plants don’t get enough food so everything gets thrown into wak. Zooplankton are the base of the food chain so every animal would be affected by this. Sea turtles are having a hard enough time with plastic and oil spills and so on. When baby sea turtles are born they find the ocean by putting the dark mass of land behind them. With all of the lights they can’t put the big dark mass behind them because there is no dark mass it a big light bulb all around us. so there are the sea turtles are dying so are all the things that depend on zooplankton and so on. you may not think that light pollution is that bad but it is horrible.
